Third grade Dillsboro Elementary School students in Ms. Mahin’s class have completed their first Project Lead the Way unit on life cycles and survival. Students entered the world of the honeybee and participated in hands-on activities such as a bee hive simulation. This simulation modeled the survival outcomes of a bee colony given different conditions and behaviors from the queen bee and her drone bees and worker bees. They also created their own bee habitats that included the necessities of survival: food, water, and shelter.

Last week was Red Ribbon Week at Manchester Elementary School. All week long, students learned about the importance of saying "no" to drugs, and each day of the week, students were encouraged to dress according to a given theme. One day's theme was "Friends Don't Let Friends Do Drugs," and students coordinated their outfits with their friends to match for the day. This fun theme encouraged students to pledge to their friends that they would support each other in rejecting drug-use together!

The Coffee Cart program at Dillsboro Elementary School offers sixth grade students some early entrepreneurial experience. Students work with our amazing library teacher, Mrs. Oles, who challenges each small group of students to create their unique radio commercial to promote the Bulldog Cafe.
The selected group will read aloud their radio commercial over the intercom during the morning announcements. While the task of speaking to the entire school may be daunting, students fe...el assured and empowered that Mrs. Oles was confident in her selection of their group that week!
The radio commercials that students have wrote have been pretty creative! Here is a sampling of some quotes from recent radio commercials:
"Hold up! Wait a minute! You don't have coffee in your hands!? Let us fix that. Order from Bulldog Cafe by 3:30 today."
"We can change your tomorrow. We have strong drinks, hot drinks, cold drinks, and YOUR drinks!"
"This is not a trick. Let us bring you a Treat! Straight from Bulldog Cafe, our coffee is the heat! Want some ice? It's the same price. Feeling nice? Then add some spice! While your at it, order a muffin or a cookie, but be sure to do so today by 3:30!"
In addition to the advertising, students work in the Bulldog Cafe and prepare orders to deliver to staff where they also must accept cash and payout the appropriate amount of change.
Thank you, Mrs. Oles for creating an opportunity for our students to experience entrepreneurship and develop new skills!

South Dearborn Middle School students in Mrs. Truitt’s seventh grade science class have been learning all about cellular biology including the structure of cells and the function of the organelles that make up cells! 🔬
To better understand the structure and function of cells, the students created both a “Cell City” and a cell model. To create their “Cell Cities,” students mapped out a cell and all of its organelles as if they were analogous parts of a city. For example, the nucleus of the cell was mapped as the city hall, and the mitochondria was mapped as a manufacturing plant. For the cell model, students followed their cell diagrams and used clay to build out an accurate clay visual resembling what the organelles look like placed correctly in a cell.
Between both the “Cell City” and cell model activities, students better understood the organelles that make up and enable our cells to do what they do!

Our featured staff member of the week is Mrs. Dianna Petty, a proud South Dearborn alumna. She attended Dillsboro Elementary School K-8 before coming to South Dearborn High School. After high school, Mrs. Petty attended Northern Kentucky University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Later, she attended Indiana Wesleyan University where she earned her master’s degree in elementary education. This is her 23rd year of teaching - all in second grade at Aurora elementary School! She credits Mrs. Mary Bailey for who she is as an educator. Mrs. Petty student-taught second grade with Mrs. Bailey before she later became a principal.
Mrs. Petty is married with two children - both currently attend AES. For fun, Mrs. Petty enjoys spending time with her family, reading, watching football (especially the Cincinnati Bengals), gardening, painting, and being a dance mom for her daughter who is a competitive dancer. A fun fact about Mrs. Petty is that she is currently taking tap dance lessons. We are so blessed for her nearly 2½ decades of service and dedication to our Red Devils

Manchester Elementary School students in Ms. Badescu’s second grade class planted wheat grass in cups to better understand the life cycle of plants!
As their wheat grass continues to grow, the students will be studying the development of the roots of the plants and they will take notes on the observable changes to the height and structure of the wheat grass. The students are also experimenting on how supplying the plants with or without water and how placing them closer to or further from direct sunlight will affect the growth of the wheat grass.

First grade students at Dillsboro Elementary School were “foam-tastic” readers! Writing CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant) in shaving cream was a fun and engaging way for young learners to practice their literacy skills. This sensory activity allowed children to physically trace and form letters, reinforcing their understanding of letter sounds and word formation. The tactile experience of writing in shaving cream can enhance learning and memory retention, making it an effective tool for early literacy development.
