The featured staff member of the week is Mrs. Alisa Pruss. Mrs. Pruss is a proud South Dearborn graduate. After high school, she attended Ball State University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. After college, she taught kindergarten at Saint Lawrence for eight years. She then taught preschool for two years prior to joining South Dearborn Community Schools, where she is in her tenth year of teaching kindergarten at Dillsboro Elementary School.
Mrs. Pruss is married (20 years—wow!) to her high school sweetheart, who is also a proud South Dearborn graduate. Together, they have four children: one SD graduate, and three other SD students in second, sixth, and tenth grade. For fun, Mrs. Pruss enjoys spending time with her family, supporting her kids and watching them do what they love, going boating, and relaxing by the pool. A fun fact about Mrs. Pruss is that she and her family lived in Malaysia for a little over a year while her husband worked abroad. We are so blessed to have her serving our students and community for the past decade!

Mr. Karasek’s history class at South Dearborn High School took a deep dive into the Great Depression, exploring how the economic collapse of the 1930s shares striking similarities with more recent crises, such as the 2008 recession. Students examined key factors like unemployment, stock market instability, and the role of government intervention in stabilizing the economy. Through thoughtful analysis and discussion, they developed a broader understanding of economic cycles and the long-term impact of public policy and social safety nets during times of financial hardship. By drawing connections between history and the present, students strengthened both their economic literacy and historical perspective.

South Dearborn Middle School invites incoming sixth-grade and seventh-grade families to attend the Rise of the Knights Parent Summits in the SDMS gym. Incoming seventh-grade (current sixth-grade) families are invited to attend on Tuesday, May 6th, from 6:30 to 8:00pm. Incoming sixth-grade (current fifth-grade) families are invited to attend on Thursday, May 8th, from 6:30 to 8:00pm. This event is designed to help students and their families make a smooth transition to middle school. Families will have the opportunity to tour the campus, meet staff, learn about course offerings, athletics, and student clubs, and gain helpful information about school policies and procedures. Students interested in joining the sixth-grade band can try out instruments with Mr. Pallada, and a representative will be available to discuss rental or purchase options. While student attendance is welcome, it is not required unless they plan to try out for band. We look forward to welcoming our future SDMS Knights!

Sixth-grade and kindergarten students at Manchester Elementary School experienced a heartwarming and educational collaboration thanks to Ms. Williams and Mrs. Teke’s classes. In one group, older students read "Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" by Mo Willems and guided their younger peers through a maze and addition practice. Another group dove into "The Lost Sea Treasure of Atlantis," solving themed puzzles and activities together. To take the fun even further, sixth-grade students designed breakout room-style centers to help kindergartners with number sequencing, counting, and logic—all while building their own leadership and mentoring skills in the process.
