Manchester Elementary School's girls and boys robotics teams performed well enough against the opposing 150 teams at the Elementary State Robotics Tournament to qualify both for the VEX World Robotics Championship in May! During both the skills section and the teamwork section of the tournament, the girls and boys robotics teams placed second and fourth respectively qualifying both for their divisional finals. The girls team scored well enough to advance to the championship finals against a team from Dyer, Indiana. With an impressive final score of 112 points, our girls team won the state championships! Congratulations to both of our robotics teams!

Aurora Elementary School is highlighting our new fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Bettie Ziegler. She has been teaching at the elementary level for over 20 years. Outside the classroom, Mrs. Ziegler enjoys time with her family including all seven of her children! Her youngest child is starting to study at the University of Cincinnati. Mrs. Ziegler also enjoys reading, cross stitching, and golfing.

Sixth grade Manchester Elementary School students in Mrs. Helton's STEM class worked through another challenging construction assignment. The students were tasked with creating a pinball machine using only paper, straws, and marbles. By cutting, and taping the paper and parts of the straws together, students were able to create uniquely designed and functional pinball machines!

Aurora Elementary School students in Mrs. Hornberger's class read Kate DiCamillo's "Because of Winn-Dixie." The students sharpened their reading comprehension skills by working in pairs to analyze how characters reacted to eating the Littmus Lozenges. This fictional candy was created by a civil war veteran who wanted to add more sweetness to the world but the secret ingredient to to the candy was sorrow. When characters consumed the candy, they enjoyed the taste but also remarked how it conjured up sad thoughts. The analysis the students completed allowed them to better understand the emotions and development of the story's characters, as well as to piece together the true nature of the Littmus Lozenges before it was revealed.

South Dearborn High School students in Mrs. Andrews's class learned about the process of reverse engineering. Through the use of a dial caliper tool, the students discovered how they could make structural and functional improvements to a wooden airplane toy. This hands-on lesson equipped students with the engineering skills necessary to improve or innovate the designs of current products.

South Dearborn Middle School students in Mr. Higgins's history class studied the 1824 presidential election. This presidential election was a competitive four-way contest between John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, William Crawford, and Henry Clay. All four men earned electoral college votes depriving Andrew Jackson, the candidate who earned the most electoral college votes, an outright victory. The contingent election was then decided by the US House of Representatives in favor of John Quincy Adams through a majority vote of all state delegations.

Dillsboro Elementary School students in Mrs. Strasemeier's class learned about the life cycle of plants including the process of seed germination and plant growth. To make this lesson more memorable, students enjoyed the opportunity of being able to plant and water seeds in their own cup of dirt. This allowed them to watch the germination process unfold as their seeds began to sprout.

South Dearborn High School students in Ms. Heffelmire's computer science class used their block-coding skills to program mini self-driving vehicles to drive a specified route. After spring break, students will learn how to code these vehicles to recognize colors. With the use of different colored cones, the students will program the vehicle to make the correct turns and avoid obstacles.

Manchester Elementary School students in Mrs. Cotton's fourth grade class are taking on a STEM challenge! Working in pairs, they are using straws, tape, a cup, popsicle sticks, and yarn to construct a bucket tower. The students are applying their engineering and creativity skills as they work together to make a stable structure.

These students are not just learning these new words and their definitions, but they are studying these words' synonyms (similar words) and antonyms (opposite words) too!

Students read and cited a variety of online and offline sources as they wrote a report detailing the nature of their favorite animal.

The students also learned how to convert between different units of measurement including twelve inches making one foot and three feet making one yard. Armed with this knowledge, students can better quantify the world around them.

Story time in Ms. Warren's third grade class at Manchester Elementary School is part of their daily routine. Recently, students have enjoyed listening to Diana Cohn's "Crane Boy." The illustrated story chronicles the journey of a Bhutanese boy concerned about the decreasing numbers of migrating cranes and his efforts to help the species. After the reading, the class discussed the story's themes and analyzed the characters involved.
