Aurora Elementary School students In Mrs. Soendlin’s sixth grade class engaged in a fun writing activity called "Frankenwriting!" Frankenwriting, as its name suggests, is the idea of combining various writing contributions together to form a story. Students were all given the same fantasy story prompt, but each had to to draw on their own unique fairytale or folk story for inspiration in writing some part of the Frankenwriting story.
Afterwards, the class collectively debated how to best weave together everyone's contributions to create their fantasy Frankenwriting story. This entertaining writing challenge offered students a new perspective on the writing process and the structure of storytelling.

First grade Aurora Elementary School students in Mrs. Cady’s class have enjoyed getting hands-on in their learning recently! Students sounded out words and practiced writing letters with shaving cream. They also constructed words together by combining sound cards to better understand how to pronounce each syllable in a given word. Further, students practiced addition and place values in math by using mini pretzel sticks and mini marshmallows to correctly represent the math equations they were solving. What a fun way to hone their reading and math skills!

The featured staff member of the week is Mr. Greg Slayback. Mr. Slayback is a proud graduate of South Dearborn High School - Class of 1984. He started driving a bus around 20 and has been doing it off and on for the last 30 years. He has two daughters who have blessed him with five grandchildren. Mr. Slayback enjoys spending time with family, going to Dave & Buster’s with his grandchildren, caring for his mother, watching football (Colts & Bengals), gardening, and mowing grass. He also loves animals. A fun fact about Mr. Slayback is that he grew up living next to Pete Rose’s sister. We are so blessed to have over three decades of service from Mr. Slayback safely transporting our students! #SuccessDriven #GrowExcelAchieve

South Dearborn Middle School students in Mr. Knigga’s art class learned about the “wet-on-wet” technique for painting with watercolors. The wet-on-wet watercolor technique is a painting method that involves applying wet paint to wet paper, which allows the paint to spread and blend together. This technique can create soft, diffused edges, smooth gradients, and atmospheric effects. The students enjoyed letting their creativity flow like water as they created beautiful and vibrant paintings with this technique!

Speakers from the International Business College spoke to South Dearborn High School students in US history classes about leadership, to economics classes about how to accumulate money for retirement, and to federal government classes about ethics. On the subject of leadership, students debated whether people are born leaders or that leaders are created as byproduct of their life’s experiences. They also learned about the importance of setting an example for others and to welcome new students or co-workers. The speakers implored students to begin saving for retirement early given how compound interest works. It will ultimately be much easier to achieve their financial retirement goals if they start saving while they are younger. During the ethics presentation, students discussed the ethics of lying in a given scenario like lying that their friend was at their house on a Saturday night instead of sharing where their friend actually was. This discussion enabled students to begin to understand ethical principles and how they apply to concrete situations. Thank you to all the speakers from the International Business College for spending your time sharing your thought provoking presentations with our students!

Ms. Shannon Gabbard's first grade students at Aurora Elementary School have been thriving in their literacy development through innovative methods that combine the "Orton Gillingham" and "Bridge to Reading" programs. By incorporating interactive activities that utilize visual aids, vocal repetition, sound identification, and physical movements, Ms. Gabbard has turned the learning of red words (words that don't follow typical phonics rules) and letter sounds into an enjoyable experience, fostering engagement and making literacy mastery both fun and effective for her young learners.
