Mrs. Andrew's agriculture students at South Dearborn High School have a new travel companion this fall: a flat Franklin, or "Frankie," headed out on four field trips as part of an FFA project.

At each stop, students will snap a photo with Frankie, introduce him to new faces, and log the visit — date, location, people met, a special memory — building a four-adventure scrapbook by the end.

It's a project built on communication and presentation skills, one new friend at a time.

Students can get a filling breakfast starting at 7:30 AM at Aurora Elementary, Dillsboro Elementary, South Dearborn Middle School, and South Dearborn High School. Each meal includes whole grains, fruit, and milk, the fuel kids need to focus, learn, and take on the day ahead.

So before the bell rings, make sure your Knight grabs a bite. A good breakfast is a great way to start the day!

What happens to math once you cross zero? Mr. Martin's students at South Dearborn Middle School are finding out this week, practicing problems with positive and negative integers.

It's building the kind of number sense that makes everything from temperatures to bank balances easier to read.

Least to greatest, greatest to least, and everything in between! That's what Ms. Strasemeier's 2nd graders at Dillsboro Elementary School tackled this week with a hands-on number cube activity!

Students picked four number cubes and worked together to put them in order, using place value to figure out which number was smallest, starting in the hundreds place. Once they had it down, the challenge grew: five cubes, then six. They even flipped the task, ordering from greatest to least before finishing up independently on their own.

It may seem like a small game, but it has a big payoff. Place value is the foundation for everything from rounding to reading a thermometer, and these Knights are building that skill one cube at a time.

What do "badge," "fudge," and "bridge" have in common? Mrs. Petty's second-graders at Aurora Elementary School worked it out this week, sounding out, spelling, and using "dge" words in their own sentences.

It's building phonics, spelling, and vocabulary all at once; the kind of practice that makes new words stick.

Reminder: The Dearborn County Health Department will be hosting a vaccine clinic available to the South Dearborn community on Tuesday, September 22nd, at 9:00am in South Dearborn Middle School.

South Dearborn High School students in Ms. Worley's English class spent the past few weeks polishing their scholarship essays, trading drafts back and forth for peer editing and revisions.

It was more than just proofreading; students learned how to put their own experiences and goals into words clearly and confidently, a skill that outlasts any single application.

Mrs. Andrew's Animal Science students at South Dearborn High School spent the week getting to know cattle breeds inside and out. Students researched everything from origin and color to unique characteristics, then turned it all into "Wanted Posters" for their breed.

They put their research to work during a gallery walk, touring each other's posters and filling in an informational chart along the way. By the end, every student had become the class expert on their breed, including the correct terminology, size, scientific names, and all.

Hands in a bin, letters everywhere, and one very important word to spell: their own name! Mrs. Oles's preschool students at Dillsboro Elementary School are digging through a sensory bin this week to find letters and build their names, letter by letter.

It's practicing letter recognition, spelling, and fine motor skills all in one, and it's a lot more fun than a worksheet.

Ask your preschooler to spell their name tonight; they've been practicing!

What does your future actually look like? Ms. Wynn's 9th-grade Basic Skills Development class at South Dearborn High School spent the week answering that question, first learning about short-term and long-term goals, then building vision boards in Canva full of pictures, logos, and quotes that meant something to them.

Students wrapped it up by presenting their boards to the class, practicing communication and self-awareness while mapping out their own plans for life after high school.

Mrs. Stanley's students at South Dearborn Middle School spent the week on a kindness project, finding creative ways to brighten someone else's day: affirmation posters, painted rocks, hidden notes, small surprises left for others to find.

It was a simple idea with a real lesson behind it: a little kindness goes a long way, especially when you don't expect anything back.

It's a small activity doing a lot of work: building letter sounds, spelling, and the fine motor skills kids need for everything from handwriting to tying their shoes.

It's practical math: the kind that helps a kid glance at an answer and know right away whether it makes sense.

South Dearborn Middle School's Student Government and Aurora Elementary School's Student Leadership Team are teaming up for a "Spare Change Challenge" benefiting Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Dearborn County!

From Monday, September 14th through Friday, September 18th, students at both schools will compete — grade vs. grade at SDMS, class vs. class at AES — to raise the most spare change, with a prize for the top group at each school.

On Friday, September 25th, students and staff at both schools are asked to wear pink for Dolly. That afternoon, SDMS Student Government will visit AES to read with PreK–5th graders and present the funds raised to the Imagination Library.
