South Dearborn High School is excited to announce the recommendation of Brad Moorhead as the new head boys’ basketball coach. Brad brings a unique blend of personal connection, strong family legacy, and diverse coaching experience to the program. His status as the 2012 valedictorian and former varsity letter winner immediately establishes a deep understanding of the school’s values and athletic traditions. This isn’t just an external hire; it’s a Knight returning home, someone who has walked the halls and worn the jersey. That inherent connection can foster a strong sense of pride and buy-in from the players, students, and community. The Moorhead family’s impressive coaching pedigree speaks volumes. With his grandfather, father, and brother all having championship-winning experience, coaching isn’t just a job for Brad; it’s in his blood. This lineage suggests a strong foundation in coaching principles, strategic thinking, and the ability to build successful programs. The expectation will undoubtedly be high, but his family’s history indicates he’s been immersed in a winning culture. His academic achievements at Indiana University, graduating with a 3.9 GPA in Applied Health Science, demonstrate his intelligence and dedication, qualities that often translate well into coaching leadership. His subsequent experience at Edgewood High School, serving as a Varsity assistant contributing to Sectional and Wabash Valley Championships, provides tangible evidence of his ability to contribute to winning programs at the high school level. The breadth of his experience, from youth leagues to varsity assistance and even officiating, offers a comprehensive understanding of the game from various perspectives. His current role as the Junior Varsity Head Coach at Martinsville High School keeps him actively involved in coaching and player development, ensuring he’s up-to-date with current coaching strategies and the nuances of high school basketball.

The fact that Moorhead will be the first SD alumnus to head the South Dearborn boys’ basketball program adds a significant layer of historical importance to this appointment. It signifies a full-circle moment and could be a powerful motivator for current players, seeing someone who once stood where they are now leading the program.
Coach Moorhead’s enthusiastic “GO KNIGHTS!” from his valedictorian speech underscores his enduring connection to South Dearborn. This genuine passion and pride in his alma mater are invaluable assets as he steps into this leadership role.
Pending school board approval at the May meeting, South Dearborn has every reason to be excited about the future of our boys’ basketball program under the leadership of Brad Moorhead. His background, experience, and deep ties to the school and community create a promising outlook for the Knights!

The featured staff member of the week is Mrs. Amy Deaton. Mrs. Deaton is a proud graduate of South Dearborn High School. After high school, she attended Butler University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology. She spent the next sixteen years as a social worker. This enabled her to be involved with Aurora Elementary School as a part of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program. She later completed a transition to teaching program through Taylor University. This is now Mrs. Deaton’s third year teaching at South Dearborn Middle School. She teaches FACS, basic math skills development, and agriculture. She is also the coach for the middle school track and cross country teams. She is involved in other leadership roles as well.
Mrs. Deaton is married (19 years—congrats!) and has two children, both of whom attend South Dearborn Community Schools. For fun, she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, hiking, reading (especially mystery books), playing board games, and painting with water colors. A fun fact about Mrs. Deaton is that she has completed a Spartan Race. A bonus fact is that she once rappelled down a 17- story building. We are so blessed to have her at SDMS proudly serving our Knights!

How important are opposable thumbs? Mrs. Smith’s students at South Dearborn High School put theirs to the test through a hands-on experiment. They completed everyday tasks—such as zipping a jacket, shuffling cards, flipping through a book, and even texting—both with and without the use of their thumbs. Students recorded their times and made predictions using if-then hypotheses, gaining firsthand insight into the vital role opposable thumbs play in human dexterity and daily function.

Students in Mr. Zimmerman’s humanities class at South Dearborn High School recently wrapped up a unit on Native American culture, with a special focus on the artistic traditions of various tribal nations. As a culminating project, students researched and crafted Native American-style masks using materials such as clay, papier-mâché, cardboard, and feathers. Each student then presented their mask to the class, explaining its cultural significance, how it reflected the values and beliefs of the tribe they studied, and why they chose that particular design. The project offered a hands-on opportunity to explore indigenous art forms while deepening their understanding of Native American history and symbolism.

In Mr. Ridlen’s fourth-grade class at Dillsboro Elementary School, students delved into the rich world of folktales. They read and analyzed classic “how and why” stories, compared different cultural explanations for natural events, and supported their interpretations with textual evidence. Through this literary journey, students sharpened their storytelling and critical thinking skills—gaining a deeper appreciation for timeless tales and the lessons they carry.

Aurora Elementary School students in Ms. Cady's first-grade class explored the intersection of creativity and technology by designing their own unique animals using AI and Adobe Express. Through the process of prompt engineering, they carefully crafted and refined their inputs—experimenting with nouns, verbs, and adjectives—to generate AI-generated visuals that matched their imaginative visions. After developing their custom creatures, students completed a planning sheet to define key details about their animals, including their diet, habitat, behaviors, and lifespan. This thoughtful planning culminated in a written report that brought their creations to life on the page. The project not only strengthened students’ digital literacy and writing skills but also introduced them to the power of precise language in guiding artificial intelligence.

The featured staff member of the week is Mr. Derrick Mann. He graduated from Bishop Brossart High School in Alexandria, Kentucky. After high school, he attended Ivy Tech, where he earned two associate degrees—one in PC support, and the other in administration and networking. Eight years ago, Mr. Mann began working with Five Star as an IT support technician, serving South Dearborn Community School Corporation. Within the last year, he officially joined our school district as a full-time employee, serving in the role of IT support. Mr. Mann recently celebrated his 20th wedding anniversary. He and his wife have two children. For fun, he enjoys spending time with his family, attending Cincinnati Cyclones games, completing construction projects, and doing tech repairs on the side. A fun fact about Mr. Mann is that his cross country team won the state championship during his senior year of high school. We are so grateful for his nearly decadelong dedication to supporting our students and staff! #SuccessDrive #GrowExcelAchieve
